The event entitled “Ioannis Kapodistrias – The Ambassador of Peace” was held with great success on the evening of Sunday, 22 March 2026, at the War Museum of Athens, in the hall bearing the name of the first Governor of Greece. The event was organized by the Byzantine Cultural Center “Panagia Melissou,” in collaboration with the Ecumenical Federation of Constantinopolitans and the Public Benefit Organization “Ampeli.”

The speakers at the event were the President of the Ecumenical Federation of Constantinopolitans, Professor Nikolaos Ouzounoglou; Associate Professor of Theology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Dr. Vasileios Gaitanis; and Hieromonk Georgios Alevras, Elder of the Holy Kellion of the Holy Trinity in Provata, Mount Athos. The event was also addressed with a brief speech by Mr. Kyriakos Maridakis, an official at the American University of International Relations, Webster University, and Ambassador of the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy.

In his presentation, Professor Ouzounoglou examined aspects of the activities of Ioannis Kapodistrias that remain less well known to the broader public, while also emphasizing the numerous and formidable obstacles faced by the Governor from both domestic and foreign actors. He concluded that contemporary Greece would be an entirely different country had Kapodistrias lived to complete his work.

Dr. Gaitanis, in turn, approached contemporary Greece from a spiritual perspective, explaining why the sacrifice of Kapodistrias will certainly not be in vain and will ultimately bring vindication to the Greek nation. Elder Georgios drew a parallel between Kapodistrias—who lived abroad in order to assist Greece—and Saint John of the Ladder, whose feast was celebrated on the same day. He further spoke of Kapodistrias as a man who earned the respect of both friends and adversaries, yet was assassinated while envisioning a Greece extending from its present borders to Constantinople, Asia Minor, and Cyprus.

At the conclusion of the event, a short tribute entitled “Ioannis Kapodistrias – The Ambassador of Peace” was screened, curated, directed, and scored by Vasileios Kostoulas, administrator of the online platform “En Archi” (enarhi.com). Subsequently, Elder Georgios presented the speakers with the commemorative album entitled “The United States at the Forefront of Promoting Hellenism,” which he has edited in recent years.
